A Mother, Wife, Classmate, Friend, and a Life Changing Cancer Diagnosis

I’m taking a break tonight from the usual case studies, because I have a friend who has had a mountain placed in front of her that no one should have to climb.  Shortly following the birth of their third child, my fellow pharmacy school classmate from the University of Minnesota Duluth Kayte O’Brien has been diagnosed with advanced-stage colorectal cancer.  She is a great person and pharmacist.  As a dad of two young children, I simply can’t imagine the range of emotions Kayte and her family are going through.

I would recommend “The Emperor of All Maladies” by Siddhartha Mukherjee. And that your friend and anyone else that gets this diagnosis is able to cure it.

My wife also had 4th stage colon cancer that also metasized to her right lower lung. She had surgery to remove both tumors. It cost so much that it ruined my credit rating. She got 12 courses of FOLFOX2. they also took out all the infected lymph nodes they could find.that was about 10 years ago. Today she is cancer free but has numb hands and feet.
