I know quite a few pharmacists who work remotely and one of the major challenges is acquiring licensure from multiple states. I have licenses in 3 states and that is plenty for me to keep track of. Some pharmacists are having to obtain double-digit licenses to perform their role as a pharmacist. What a waste of everyone’s time. I’m optimistic that a recent announcement of 2026 Uniform MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination) changes will help reduce the testing and administrative burden of hard-working pharmacists.
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has announced that they are going to create a “uniform” MPJE that states will be able to utilize. NABP is also in charge of administering the NAPLEX exam. I’m hopeful that many states will adopt this exam and allow pharmacists to focus on helping patients rather than passing 50 different state law exams. The Uniform MPJE content outline is available and can be found here.
Word Of Caution
It’s important to note that even with the Uniform MPJE, NABP cautions that pharmacists will still be responsible for adhering to state-specific laws and regulations not covered by the exam. State boards of pharmacy retain the authority to grant licensure and enforce compliance with their specific regulations. You need to understand the laws and rules of the state that you are working within.
How Many States Will Jump On Board?
This is the big question that will be determined. We are still early in the stages with the expected rollout of the Uniform MPJE in June 2026. I would anticipate slow adoption by states into 2027-2028 but I’m hopeful that many will jump on board more quickly. As of May 2025, I haven’t seen any formal adoption by any states at this point, but it is early.
Study Materials for the Uniform MPJE
I’m anticipating putting together more resources on the Uniform MPJE over the next 12 months. With that said, my book on pharmacy federal law (MPJE Master) will definitely be helpful in preparing for this exam. Much of the content outline is found within the book. Be sure to get the 2nd edition which has quite a few updates compared to the original version.
If you have any updates on your specific state that is adding the Uniform MPJE, please feel free to send me a note at [email protected] and I can update this post as we learn more about this rollout.
